Dear Dan,
Last month we sent our first newsletter using Constant Contact to a small group of members and contacts. This month we are expanding to our entire contact list, all those who have previously received our pdf newsletter. We hope that this new format will be more useful to you, and easier for us to create, making for more frequent and timely newsletters. The greatest benefit, for you and us, is that you can manage your own newsletter account, changing your email address or even unsubscribing (though we hope you'll stay with us).
Congratulations to Ellen Kunz, formerly an AmeriCorps volunteer with Nevada Outdoor School, who won an NNREC membership for filling out the newsletter survey. And thanks to the other eleven people who responded!

New Board Members
|
|
NNREC welcomes Margie Klein, Allison Brody, and Debbie Canestrelli who have recently become members of the Board of Directors.
Margie recently became an Conservation Educator with
the Nevada Department of Wildlife and is excited about
combining NNREC and NDOW efforts to increase
environmental education in the schools and professional
development for educators. Allison is the Conservation
Education and Interpretation Strategy Project
Manager with the Public Lands Institute at UNLV and
has been working closely with NNREC, helping us
obtain our EETAP
capacity and certification grants. Debbie is the
Education
Coordinator of The Atlantis Aquarium, active in
CHOLLA and our strategic planning effort.
At the Annual Members Meeting, other board members will be elected. If you have questions about board membership, or would like to stand for election, or would like to nominate someone else, please contact Director Dan Allison, director@nnrec.org. Nominations may be made ahead of time, or at the meeting.

At the Annual Members Meeting, October 21, NNREC will
recognize Environmental Educator - Dave Sanger, Program -
High Sierra Resource Workshop, and PLT Educator - Sue
Jacox. Dave helped found NNREC and was very active during
the early days. The High Sierra Resource Workshop (HSRW)
is a summer program for high school students to learn about
resource management, spend time in the wilderness, and
make new friends. Sue Jacox has supported PLT through
Great Basin Outdoor School and other venues, and is also a
founder of NNREC.

NNREC 20th Anniversary
|
|
1986-2006
2006 is the 20th anniversary of NNREC! We hope you
can join us at the Annual
Members Meeting in Incline Village on October 21
to celebrate. We have a brief chronology of NNREC on
the website, but would really like rememberances,
who was there, and photos. Please help us build a
better history by sharing - don't assume that other
people will remember or respond. Contact Director
Dan Allison, director@nnrec.org,
or 775-882-2375. We'll share what we have at the
meeting and on the website.
We started in 1986 with organizing meetings in both
northern and southern Nevada, becoming the Nevada
Environmental Education Council. By 1988, we settled
on the name Nevada Natural Resource Education
Council, were actively holding Project WILD and
Project Learning Tree workshops, and became a
nonprofit organization.

2007 Lamoille Institute for Educators (LIFE)
|
|
July 30 - August 3
The Lamoille Institute for Educators will be held
July 30 through August 3. This week-long
professional development experience for teachers and
other educators provides both a broad exposure to
curriculum and natural history, as well as in-depth
learning and practice in select subjects. Lamoille
Canyon in the Ruby Mountains, near Elko, is perhaps
the most
beautiful place in Nevada. We are currently
developing a theme for this session, so mark the
dates on your calendar now, then check the website
in November to see what we've come up with.

Mini-Grants
|
|
$1250 awarded
NNREC has awarded two mini-grants to Minden
Elementary School and one to Nevada Outdoor School,
with funds from the Nevada Division of Forestry
Conservation Education Program. The last two years,
we have awarded grants only to people (and their
schools and nonprofit organizations) who attended
the Lamoille summer workshop. We are seeking funding
to greatly expand the program next year so that
mini-grants (up to $500) will be available both to
2007 LIFE participants, and to other members and
partners of
NNREC.

Please let us know what you'd like to see in the next
newsletter!
Sincerely,

Dan Allison, Director
