No Child Left Inside Act of 2007
|
|
Please contact your representatives
The No Child Left Inside Act of 2007 (NCLI) has now been introduced into the
Senate by Jack Reed of Rhode Island and into the House of Representatives by John Sarbanes of Maryland, so now is the time to write a letter
of support and to call your congressional representatives.
Our previous newsletter provided some background info, and the best single source of information is still the No Child Left Inside website. Rather than repeating the information which is well presented there, we'd like to highlight what this could mean for Nevada.
Nevada, like most places, has gone along with the trend encouraged by the No Child Left Behind Act (actually the Elementary and Secondary Education Act) to prioritize reading and math over all other subject areas. The NCLI would help bring subjects back into balance by recognizing the value of all subject areas, including environmental education. It also contains funding to build capacity for environmental literacy at the state level, up to $100,000, some of which would come to NNREC.
What can you do? 1. Read the information on the No Child Left Inside web site and NNREC's NCLI page 2. Look at NNREC's letter to Dean Heller 3. Contact your congressional representatives; contact information is available at Congress.org |
K-12 Grants Updated
|
|
NNREC's K-12 Grants page has been updated with some new grants and contact information. This page highlights environmental literacy opportunities primarily for K-12 teachers and their classrooms, but includes some grants for nonformal educators. The PLT GreenWorks grant program has been considerably expanded this year, and the next deadline is October 31. NNREC's own mini-grant program will be announced in the next newsletter. More...
