River of Words Workshops

- Poetry techniques
- Journal writing
- Art & poetry contest
Learn how to turn outdoor experiences into creative poetry that informs and inspires your students. Dan Allison leads this workshop using time-tested techniques from ancient China that make creating poetry fun, memorable and anxiety-free. Participants will also make journals, learn new ways to bring nature into the classroom, as well as how to utilize school-yards and field trips effectively. This workshop is designed for both formal and informal educators and links to the River of Words Watershed Explorer curriculum and the River of Words: Images and Poetry in Praise of Water book, combining watershed education with history, math, science, social studies, geography, language and the arts. You’ll gain valuable skills that help youth to develop an informed respect for the natural world and an understanding of their place in it. Information about the international art and poetry contest will be provided.
Workshops in western Nevada (Carson, Douglas, Washoe, Storey, Lyon, Churchill counties) the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee River Watershed in California (parts of El Dorado, Placer and Nevada counties), and the Carson River Watershed in California (parts of Alpine county) cost $10 per teacher. Workshops in other parts of Nevada cost $10 per teacher plus actual travel costs. The cost includes journal making materials, information on River of Words, and facilitation.
The format is generally 2.5 hours after school, but other formats are possible. Workshops can be partly indoors and partly outdoors, or all indoors, depending on the weather and desires of the participants, but outside time is clearly inspriational.
