Summer Programs for Teens

NNREC provides information about a series of Summer Wilderness Experiences for Teens, as part of our work to support programs which get kids outdoors, learning and enjoying their connection with nature. The actual programs are hosted by a variety of partners, not NNREC.

Nevada Outdoor School

Nevada Outdoor School will be offering three summer programs specifically for high school aged people (entering 9th through 12th grade). For all trips, the first day will be in the "frontcountry" with team building activities and getting to know the group, wilderness survival, leave no trace, and backpacking skills, and the basics of resource management and environmental issues. Then into the backcountry for a seven-day backpack trip! We'll learn about environmental issues that students can become involved in to make a difference. You'll have a chance to both learn about and apply information on natural history and land management, so the trip is a perfect introduction if you are thinking of a career in natural resource management or education. Well beyond the education, though, you'll enjoy hanging out with people your age in a beautiful place, away from the stress of normal life. Both trips are designed for high school students entering grades 9 through 12.

If you do not have backpacking and wilderness equipment, Nevada Outdoor School can supply most of the items, so you would only need to get a few, and small scholarships can help with this. You do NOT need to have ever backpacked before to participate in these trips, but you do need to be in good condition from some sort of regular exercise or sports, and willing to carry your own gear and a share of group equipment and food on the backpack.

Lifetime Adventures

Lifetime Adventures, sponsored by Boys & Girls Club of Las Vegas and many partners, will offer learning experiences, day hikes, and three day backpack trips in the Mt. Moriah Wilderness in eastern Nevada.

Boys & Girls Club Backpack

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association and the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe will offer a three day backpack trip for members of the Boys & Girls Club.

Tahoe Center for the Environmental Sciences

The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences (TCES) will offer a summer program for kids that will include some time in the backcountry. This program is still being planned, so more details will be posted when available.
