The Carson City District office schedules tours of Hidden Cave, an Indian cache site at the Grimes Point Archaeological Area. A self-guided interpretive trail is maintained at the site. An archaeological study packet is available.

The RC&D provides Nevada’s six western counties with financial, technical, and political support to solve natural resource conservation, community development, and small business problems. We are composed of representatives of the six western county commissions, conservation districts, tribal governments, and irrigation districts. We coordinate and facilitate partnerships that promote private/public conservation, development, and education programs for the Carson, Walker, and Truckee River watersheds.

The NRCS helps landowners and communities conserve and manage natural resources. Slide shows, videos, publications, posters, and other educational materials are available on natural resource conservation, including soils, wind and water erosion, and snow surveys. A poster contest is sponsored.

The Division of Minerals is responsible for administering programs and activities to further the responsible development and production of Nevada’s mineral resources. Educational activity guides and curriculum supplements are available for use in grades K-12. Videos are available for loan to classroom teachers. Classroom demonstrations and presentations can also be arranged. The Division, together with the Nevada Mining Association, cosponsors the Annual Northern and Southern Nevada Minerals Education Workshop for teachers (K-12).

The State Energy Office serves as a central clearinghouse on energy conservation activities in the state. The Office provides information on energy conservation and renewable energy resources, including solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal. Materials on alternative transportation fuels and vehicles are also available. Publications, videos, and brochures may be obtained, as well as information on additional agencies and organizations offering services. Grants for specific energy conservation projects may be available.

The Division of Conservation Districts supports Nevada’s 27 local conservation districts. The local districts sponsor educational programs and help send students to the Nevada Youth Range Camp. Districts also initiate and administe conservation programs and projects at the local level. The District II office coordinates interpretive programs for all of western Nevada. The parks provide the programs covering a variety of environmental education programs and activities for people of all ages. Subjects range from plants, animals, local history, survival, and ecology to conservation and preservation.

The Division of Water Planning is the state sponsor of Project WET (Water Education for Teachers). This program provides water education workshops for teachers, youth leaders, and resource specialists on water education including local and state water issues, groundwater, surface water, water law, water use, and conservation. The Project WET activity guide provides hands-on, classroom ready activities and demonstrations for K-12 grade students. Other materials available on loan are groundwater models, water quality trunks, water history trunks, and other teacher aids on water (books, posters, videos). This Division prepares and distributes information on water resources in Nevada such as the Walker River and Truckee River Chronologies, the Water Dictionary, and various other water and economic reports.

The Natural Heritage Program serves as a centralized data base containing detailed and computer-retrievable data on sensitive species of animals, plants, and communities. The data covers the entire state including State, Federal, and private lands. The program is available for environmental review and planning for both development and conservation efforts.

NNREC promotes environmental education and awareness. Projects include establishing a resource center for materials which can be loaned for outdoor environment lessons, workshops for teachers on organizing environmental education programs, and cooperating with other community groups to promote environmental education in Nevada. Both the northern and southern chapters actively promote Project Learning Tree, Project WILD, and other workshops in which participants clamor for animal skulls, “tree cookies”, and learn to use thermometers, drift nets, basins, hatch kits, increment borers, and other instruments to conduct environmental investigations.

Project Learning Tree (PLT) teaches environmental education through approved hands-on activities (K-12) using the “tree” as the learning window. The objective is to teach kids how to think, not what to think. PLT also provides learning workshops to familiarize teachers with activities that will incorporate environmental education into all classroom programs.

The objective of RESULTS is to change government policies and priorities around the world to work toward the end of hunger and poverty in environmentally sustainable ways. Cooperative Extension creates public education programs to meet the needs of communities throughout the state. Educational forums, publications, and volunteer activities address natural resource management, including water management, for the general public and youth audiences. Partnerships with other agencies, government entities, and educational institutions are encouraged.
Cooperative Extension offers an in-class teaching packet on plants, soil, and water that can be used in conjunction with a trip to a garden. The packet visually demonstrates examples of low and high water consuming plants. Water use can be monitored and plants labeled.
